Porsche's second-generation 2011 Cayenne SUV takes more than a few styling cues from the Panamera sedan.

February Sales (09.03.2010 00:03h): Not so shocking, Ford Up; Toyota Down

DETROIT - For Toyota, U.S. February sales were conveniently reported last Tuesday, while much of the automotive press were in Geneva. It was convenient timing for General Motors, too. The erstwhile automotive giant...

Readers' Letters (06.03.2010 04:03h): Cummins Concerns

Dear Truck Trend, Regarding the Ram Heavy Duty: I would make the case that unless an owner intends to pull heavy on the Interstate more than 90 percent of the time, he shouldn't buy the Cummins, because of its emissions...

Jason (05.03.2010 12:00h): This Is One On Point 2008 Tundra

Kansas gets a bad rap. People joke about the flat land, wheat fields, and the Kansas City Royals, but we’re guessing these people don’t know about the world-class bird hunting in Kansas, not to mention Kansas City Barbecue. If you live in Kansas and you enjoy bird-hunting, you need five things: A shotgun Non-toxic ammo A license for the birds you’re looking for A dog that knows how to find birds more than one is even better A truck Of course, you can still hunt if you know someone who has #4 and #5. If you don’t have a truck ...

Jason (03.03.2010 18:57h): Toyota Offers NUMMI Workers $250 Million Severance

We’ve been following the closure of NUMMI for a few months now, and it seems that the story is just about done. Earlier today, Toyota announced that they are giving NUMMI workers a $250 million dollar “transition” fund that could be used to pay out bonuses to NUMMI employees, as well as offer career counseling and training. While it’s obviously not this simple, $250 million divided up amongst 4,500 workers plus or minus is about $55k per person. While this severance isn’t tremendous, it’s certainly nothing to sniff at…especially considering Toyota was forced to close NUMMI when GM filed bankruptcy. ...

Jason (03.03.2010 12:00h): 2000 Toyota Tundra Owner Helps To Catch a Murderer

Owning a truck means a lot of different things to people, but it sure seems like truck owners are more helpful than regular old car owners…think about it: When someone needs a tow, who do they call? When it’s time to move? When someone needs a jump or mechanical help? It turns out that truck owners help fight crime too – here’s a story about a 2000 Tundra owner that helped catch a murderer.

It started at a McDonalds

Lawton Walker was sitting in his Tundra in the McDonalds parking lot when a robber confronted two McDonald’s employees in the ...

Geneva 2010 (03.03.2010 07:03h): Opel Meriva -- Finally, Real Suicide Doors!

Opel/Vauxhall's lawyers insist they be called "Flex Doors," but we know them as "suicide doors," being hinged at the rear so back-seat passengers have to step out into traffic. That said, they're real cool and make it...

eBay Find (02.03.2010 05:03h): 1988 Ford Ranger Saleen Sportruck

A 1988 Ford Ranger Saleen Sportruck is on sale at eBay right now . A Saleen-ified Ranger truck from 1988? Yes, you read that right. If you believe the seller's claim that only 27 of these unique trucks were ever made, that...

Jason (01.03.2010 12:00h): UAW Leaders Forget GM Closed NUMMI

Perhaps lost in all the recall news, we’d like to touch base on the pending closure of New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc., an auto plant that was a joint venture between GM and Toyota. Started in 1984, NUMMI is the very last major auto manufacturing plant in California. While California’s anti-business regulations contributed to NUMMI’s closure, there’s no denying that General Motor’s bankruptcy was the event that started it all. When General Motors backed out of NUMMI, Toyota followed suit. Why isn't GM getting any of the blame from the UAW? When GM abandoned NUMMI, Toyota followed suit…as is the fashion ...

Jason (27.02.2010 14:00h): BusinessWeek’s Scathing Review of Toyota Congressional Hearings

BusinessWeek contributor Ed Wallace wrote an article titled “The Toyota Witch Hunt” that is a must-read for anyone following Toyota’s unintended acceleration debacle. Here are some of the highlights: Wallace has uncovered information that contradicts the testimony of Rhonda Smith below who claimed her 07′ Lexus ES350 accelerated out of control despite her every effort to stop the vehicle. Smith claims that the vehicle would not stop no matter how hard she hit the brakes, and that shifting into any other gear – even reverse – would not stop the car. For many, Smith’s testimony was heart-felt and compelling. However, ...

Jason (26.02.2010 12:00h): Five Ways Toyota is Like Communist Russia

For all of our boasting here at TundraHeadquarters about the fact that the Tundra is more ‘American’ than the Dodge Ram or the GM pickups, and that Toyota’s profits on the Tundra don’t really go overseas, the recent recall fiascos officially known as “Recall-mageddon” – shout out to J.D. illustrate that Toyota’s leadership is frighteningly lacking. The similarities between Toyota leadership and Soviet Russia - just for fun. Here are some facts and figures about Toyota’s senior executives and management chain-of-command…and how eerily similar it is to old-time Soviet Russia: 1. Neither Toyota or the USSR had many “foreigners” on the ...

Jason (26.02.2010 04:16h): TundraHeadquarters Becoming TitanHeadquarters

As a result of a lost bet, TundraHeadquarters.com will be renamed TitanHeadquarters.com. The details of this bet are currently secret. There will be a short ceremony on April 1st, 2010, to celebrate the change over. That is all. The Land Air Sea GPS Tracking Key is a popular GPS tracking device.

Jason (25.02.2010 12:00h): Toyota Unintended Acceleration Hearings Summary

This week a congressional committee interviewed a handful of people claiming to be unintended acceleration victims, safety experts, and Toyota execs. While Toyota has focused this week on enhanced recall measures and a re-commitment to quality, the media has focused on rampant speculation. Here’s a breakdown of all the major developments from the hearings: 1.Toyota execs actually apologized. Both Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda and Toyota USA President James Lentz offered apologies. This may be symbolic to some, but it represents a shift in thinking at Toyota in Japan. 2. Exponent has an unlimited budget. Jim Lentz testified that: “in December ...

Jason (25.02.2010 11:59h): Toyota Explains Throttle Control System on Video

Toyota PR Machine Finally Gearing Up

Toyota has made two critical errors over the last 6 months. First, Toyota admittedly dragged their feet on a series of floor mat and accelerator pedal recalls. Second, when the “sticky pedal” recall hit, Toyota’s PR machine responded terribly. It was as if Toyota tried to do the exact opposite of the right move. They responded slowly. They avoided making a statement. They acted as if the problem would “go away” if they ignored it. Things have changed. Now that some time has gone by, Toyota’s media team is starting to churn out some ...

Video Find (25.02.2010 06:02h): Arnold vs. H2: A Hummer Tribute

Hummer is dead to General Motors. After talks with an interested Chinese suitor broke down, GM announced today it would wind down the brand. So today, as a tribute, we're revisiting a Motor Trend Video classic that...

Readers' Letters (24.02.2010 00:02h): American Compacts

Dear Truck Trend , I identified with Mr. Reed's sentiments in his American Compacts "Emissions Check" entry January/February 2010 . Being in a similar age bracket, I can remember the U.S. steel industry's demise. I can...

Recently, a truck driver in Salem, Oregon got his truck stuck. He was driving a 14-foot vehicle under an 11-foot overpass. The reason? He was busy looking at his GPS.

Toyota Recall Saga Continues (23.02.2010 23:02h): Be Careful What You Wish For

So Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda's finally manned up and is going to testify before Congress this week. Hoping they nail him to the wall? Hoping Toyota gets what it deserves for its bungled handling of the whole unintended...

Jason (23.02.2010 12:00h): Toyota’s Legal Troubles, Independent Testing, and Little Black Boxes

This promises to be a tough week for Toyota. While they’ve finally gotten their PR team in gear, the CEO of the company Akio Toyoda is going to be testifying before congress and it’s not likely to go well. Toyoda’s not a confident English speaker, a lot of embarrassing facts have come out about Toyota, members of congress are going to be working hard to get a good anti-Toyota sound bite or two, and despite a mountain of evidence that Toyota’s unintended acceleration problem is completely overblown, mainstream media continues to harp on the issue. Here’s a break-down of what ...

Jason (23.02.2010 11:59h): Toyota CEO Writes Op-Ed in Wall Street Journal

Akio Toyoda, scion of the Toyoda family pun intended , has written an open letter to the Wall Street Journal. Here are the highlights: 1. This wasn’t an apology. Toyoda didn’t ever say he was sorry, nor did he offer an apology. While one could argue that technically Toyota has done nothing wrong – they’ve followed the letter of the law, if not the spirit – that’s really not the point. Now is the time to tell the American public that mistakes have been made, and that you’re sorry for the panic and the poor way these problems were managed. ...

Jason (22.02.2010 12:01h): Toyota’s New Tundra Deconstructed Ad Campaign

Here’s the concept: Toyota gives a new Tundra to an East Texas cattle ranch and says “do your worst.” Two years later, Toyota takes the truck back and studies it. Then, Toyota interviews the guys who drove the truck every day and ask them for their impressions. The results are three videos on YouTube that seem completely genuine, not to mention compelling. Check out these Tundra Deconstructed Videos – very entertaining: Click here to view the embedded video. Click here to view the embedded video. Click here to view the embedded video.

Jason (19.02.2010 12:00h): Four Wheeler Magazine Evaluates Tundra 4.6 For 2010 Truck of the Year

This year’s “Four Wheeler Magazine Pickup Truck of the Year” award competition was between the 2010 Tundra 4.6, the Ram 2500 Mega Cab, the Ram Power Wagon, and Ford’s F-150 Raptor. Surprisingly, Four Wheeler magazine’s trail-oriented award did NOT go to the Raptor [which, by the way, is an awesome truck]. Instead, Four Wheeler magazine chose the 3/4-ton Power Wagon as their favorite trail truck of 2010. Four Wheeler magazine 2010 Truck of the Year Competition While the Tundra earned fourth place, Four Wheeler magazine did point out that the competition wasn’t quite equal. The Tundra was the least powerful and ...
